Players can also race other people's ghost in a 1V1 race or up to seven ghosts. Once a race is completed, the player's time is saved as a ghost which can be raced. The player is given Triple Atomic Boosts at the start to speed up or to take shortcuts to save time. Record Rally is this game's time trials mode where the players can race in a track for the fastest time possible.
At the end of the grand prix, if the player is in first (or is in the top 3), they get a trophy and will occasionally unlock something (either a new cup or character). The main objective of Tourney Tour is to finish the grand prix in first place in all 4 courses for the chosen cup (or at least with the most points). The engine classes are 50cc (Top speed is low and CPU's have limited items), 100cc (Top speed is average and CPU's has a wider item selection), 150cc (Top speed is maxed out and CPU's are likely to have deadlier items), Mirror (Similar to 150cc, but the tracks are flipped), and 200cc (Top speed is maximized, making turning difficult), the latter two being unlockable. Tourney Tour is this game's grand prix mode where the player races against 11 CPUs in cups consisting of 4 courses in different engine classes. Racers who are ahead generally get weaker items such as Oil Slicks and Phony Boxes, but those who are falling behind get dangerous and aggressive items like Nitro Atomic Boosts and Missiles. There are hexagon-shaped boxes called Hex Boxes, laid throughout each track that gives racers a random item depending on how far or behind they are in the race that can either help them or hinders driving opponents.
Yellow sparks gives a weak boost (Level 1), Blue sparks gives a medium boost (Level 2), Purple sparks gives a strong boost (Level 3), and Rainbow sparks gives the strongest boost (Max Level)). The longer the player drifts, the better the boost they get. By drifting, the player will be able to turn at sharper corners of tracks better and will build up a boost which has different levels of power depending on how long the player is drifting and the color of the tire's sparks. One of the main mechanics of Banana Bus Formula is boosting which can be achieved through various actions, mainly by driving on boost panels, performing tricks in mid-air, or by drifting. Like all Mario Kart titles, the main objective for the player is to cross the finish line first in various courses before the other racers by going fast.
